Description

Solaria Jonica 1959 is an extraordinary wine, a monument to Apulian winemaking that has withstood the decades. Crafted from Primitivo grapes grown on bush vines in Torricella at Baron Bardoscia’s historic estate, it is the result of the harmonious union of Ionian sun and time. Described as the "cream of old wine" and awarded an excellent score of 19/20 by renowned international critic Jancis Robinson, it offers powerful aromas and a dense concentration reminiscent of the great wines of Málaga. A three-time gold medal winner in Los Angeles in 2002, it is the ultimate and unrivaled companion to dark chocolate or for moments of pure wine meditation.

MaWa Tip: A masterpiece for moments of meditative enjoyment, which finds its ideal partner in the savory flakes of the Gran Maddalena Riserva 24 months Cooprolama or the noble slices of the Salame Riserva 180 days Co.Ci.No. The intense flavor density of these specialties meets the monumental complexity of the wine on an equal footing.

Vineyard of origin: Salento, Apulia, Italy
Soil characteristics: Apulian red soil, rich in iron and minerals, calcareous-clayey, located near the sea
Vine training system: Traditional Apulian sapling
Harvest period: Historic 1959 harvest. Manual harvesting of the grapes followed by natural drying in the salty sun of Salento.
Winemaking: Traditional winemaking with long maceration, naturally halted by the high concentration of sugar and extracts from the dried grapes.
Refinement:
Decades of aging and slow oxidation in concrete vats, bottled after more than forty years without fining or aggressive filtration.

Appearance: Deep amber to mahogany brown with warm copper reflections.
Aroma (Nose): Tertiary and oxidative bouquet of enormous complexity: dried figs, dates, candied orange and lemon peel, chestnut honey, dark cocoa, walnut shell, as well as subtle balsamic and petrol notes.
Taste (Palate): Sweet, viscous, and with a heavy, dense body. Surprises with a lively acidity that focuses the sweetness and prevents any sense of heaviness.
Finish: Extremely long, sheer endless lingering finish of dried fruits, spice, and roasted notes.
Pairings: A sublime meditation wine to be enjoyed alone in moments of contemplation. In a culinary context, it pairs excellently with full-bodied, long-aged blue cheeses or high-quality dark chocolate.
